[photo-3d] Question for newsletter editors - pdf picture quality

I have a question for Ray Moxom or other stereo Newsletter
Editors:

I received an email from one of our subscribers by
email who received our first newsletter issue in
pdf format and thought that the jpg compression was
way too heavy, resulting in terrible picture quality.
I looked closer at the printed pdf pages and he is
correct.

When "printing" the newsletter from Microsoft Publisher
to pdf format, I have the option of setting the image
compression. I have selected "heavy". I did a few
experiments by setting it to "medium" and "low" and got
somehow better results, but at the expense of file size.
For example, the first newsletter is 355KB at heavy
compression and 627KB at medium compression. I realize
that the compression of the image as it was imported
in the Publisher file is also a factor.

So here are my questions: What is the best strategy
to follow for best results, regarding the format and
compression that the images are saved and imported into
the newsletter?

If the issue boils down to image quality vs. size of
file, what is the best compromise? What is a practical
upper limit in the size of a file like a monthly
newsletter to be transmitted via email?

These questions might not be directly related to stereo
photography but since these issues will affect the
electronic transmission of stereo information I thought
I'd ask here.

Thank you for any input!
