I believe you are barking up the wrong tree. There is utterly no trade-off that will please
everyone-- or even most everyone.
The mistake you have made is the vain assumption that every subscriber will *want* to wait
around for every single image to download. By packaging text and photos into a PDF, that is
what you force them to do.
A better medium for distributing your newsletter, in my professional opinion, would be a
website with thumbnail pictures. This way, the basic newsletter would download quickly for all.
Then each of your subscribers could choose for themselves which images warrant an extended
download. There are a number of other technical advantages that I will not bore this list with.
Alternately, you could distribute a PDF compressed at maximum settings. Then make full-size,
high quality images available via a separate web page. Depending on your expertise, this
may be easier for you.
A newsletter distributed thusly would please both high and low bandwidth subscribers --
something no ordinary PDF will do.
