Just a comment about alkaline vs silver batteries; I don't know if
silver is less likely to leak than alkalines, but I think that the main
reason that silver is generally preferred for photography is because
these keep a more constant voltage (for more accurate light readings)
throughout their lifetime, then they drop off quickly when they finally
go dead. Alkalines by contrast lose voltage more gradually so your light
readings will be different depending on where you are on the degradation
curve. Silver costs more but gives more consistent and accurate
readings.

In terms of a replacement for the 1.35V mercury battery (if it is the
same type that I am familiar with), there is an adaptor available (for
$30) that allows one to use a common 1.5V button battery which goes
inside the adaptor, and it corrects the size and voltage problem. I
haven't tried these myself, but considered it for my Olympus OM-1 and
some other mercury dependent cameras that I own. They have been featured
in an article in Popular Photography in the past, which is where I first
heard about these. http://www.criscam.com/cris2i.htm Again, I am not
sure whether this is the kind of mercury battery you would need, but
someone may find this info useful. -Linda
