I just like the Realist because it does what it is designed to do, and it
does so very well. If you find a tool that works, and if it does
everything it is designed for, that's all you need. I think for the most
part, those who do not like it either have never used one, or this
example of high technology from the 1950's befuddles them.
The Realist is simple to load, simple to fix, simple to focus and simple
all around. What more do you need? Some will argue - and in fact have
told me that the lack of telephoto lenses is a definite minus. Well, they
really are not needed or David White would have offered them. I know some
of you shoot telephoto stereo, but in all my years, I have never seen the
need for this or even wanted to try to use telephoto lenses. The world is
square, or so I have been told. Anything that changes much past normal
vision has not been my cup of Earl Grey. The only exception to this is
macro.
But to each his own, the old lady said as she kissed the cow.
As I have said before and will repeat here, much of what is made today
lacks the quality of the past - not to mention the class. Much of what's
available today is inferior to the past and much of the past is gaining
more and more popularity because the less enlightened of the world is
slowly coming to realize this very simple truth. Am I saying the current
crop of stereo cameras is bad or useless? No way. The RBT is a good
camera, but still too costly for the vast majority of users out there.
As for the debate over what is better, well, only you can decide, my
friends. All I have going for me is a knowledge of what once was and a
desire to get the best out of everything I do. I could purchase an RBT,
but my existing cameras are perfectly fine. Everything I have is old, but
much of it is bought recently. Why? Simple. It works well with a minimum
of problems.
So for those of you that prefer cameras other than the Realist....fine by
me. Those who hate the Realist....fine, but at least tell me / us why.
