Hi Doug and welcome to photo-3d,

While it is true that only the center of our vision
is in 3d, we can move our head around and view the
entire world around us in 3d, so this fact does not
seem to bother us.
But when we are looking at a stereo image through a
viewer, we cannot turn our head around to view
the rest of the scene in 3d. This is a problem
and a solution to this problem is to present the
stereo image with an appropriate stereo window in
a way that looking at this image resembles looking
at a real scene out of a real window.
What you describe kills the window and, even though
I have not tried it, I am willing to guess that it
takes the pleasure out of looking at a well-mounnted
and well-presented stereo image.
