A good answer, Bob.
A very general comment is that usually the longer the focal length, the
wider the stereo base. However, stereoscopic imaging is very subjective.
Many factors enter into the decision as to the most appropriate stereo base
for a specific subject.
Certainly the particular impression or effect that you are looking for is a
consideration. Such as, do you want the most realistic impression, or are
you going for miniaturization or giantism? Do you have insufficient or
excessive depth range that you want to compensate for in terms of
comfortable parallax ranges? Is this (image) being used for an accurate,
measurable scientific, medical, or technical application, or is this to be a
pretty picture, a work of art where esthetics may be more important that
accuracy?
Lots to consider. This is why one particular rule or mathematical formula
may be useful for one purpose, but less important or even invalid for
another.
