Possibly, but the question remains, who will pay for it? Lots of comments
about this and that company wanting to do it, but costs always become a
big part of the picture. Processors might run faster; they most certainly
will. But to develop software suitable for creating the missing view and
creating Vector Graphics and Ray Traced images that look real is a long
way off. In the world of 2D, computer animation is used more and more.
Jurassic Park is a great example. However, they were creating models and
realistic textures and movement. NOT the same as creating what we want.
I want top quality Polarized Stereo Motion Pictures with a good script
and stereo becoming like Foley Effects, Sound Effects and Music - hidden
in the background where the viewer does not conspicuously perceive them.
Overtness has no place in Stereo Movies if they are to succeed on a mass
scale.
Yes, it is getting better, but being able to create a naturally looking
image is not so easy and will take tremendous breakthroughs in software
design.
As for 3D movies and the recent threads about the decline/demise of 3D, I
just had a major thought breakthrough. That is: PEOPLE DO NOT CARE ABOUT
STEREO. We are all in a little world of our own creation that agrees
Stereo is THE way to take pictures, but I am sadly beginning to think
that the average Joe could care less about Stereo. I think any
breakthrough will be accepted by the public for a short time and most
will view 3D as a fad or a gimmick. No one outside our little 3D world
seriously praises any 3D movie they see. It is interesting, and they
wonder how it was done, but no glowing raves.
This must change with huge technological breakthroughs, and the public
needs to see stereo at its best.
I think that 3D has a air of silliness about it, and the general public
will not seriously consider stereo as a serious thing. What needs to
happen is more and more exposure by the public to 3D images. Nothing will
happen unless the public clamors for 3D and those providing 3D such as
movie producers and publishers also accept stereo as well.
That's why I consider the SI 3D Issue to be so important. Not for the
quality of the stereo, but it is a national publication that offered 3D
to the public. They took a chance and it looks fairly nice. It is a start
in the right dimension.
Sadly, I do not predict the end of stereo; it will always be championed
by a few of us, but unless things change, it will always remain as a
novelty, a fad and something to be smiled at but not taken seriously.
This happens with other things as well. I like lots of things that are no
longer manufactured, as do the members of other mailing lists. But we are
not the public - just a dedicated few.
