I totally disagree with this. I have yet to see anything that is an
automatic process. As far I know many man hours are involved with a good 3D
conversion of one still picture. I don't think this has anything to do with
computer speed. There are a lot of creative choices to be made and I don't
think it's possible in the foreseeable future to do this effectively with an
entire film.
Take the Star Wars example. Many matte paintings were used in the film. They
are not 3D and never were. They have objects in the foreground and
background that are really just on a flat piece of glass. How does a
computer decide at what depth an object is?

If it is done, I have a feeling the results would be similar to all those
colorized films from the 80's. Yuck! :)

Bob Maxey is bang on with his assessment of 3D. I think the conversion
process is just around the corner.
