[photo-3d] SI 3D
Allan and others: I do not mean to detract from either the effort or
the accomplishment of those who did the 3D portion of the SI issue. I'm
just giving my subjective reaction to the product. Yes, (of course!) I
used the glasses that were in the magazine; I just noted that I was the
first to use them in spite of the magazine obviously having been handled
by many before me. It's a shame others hadn't tried to view the
pictures properly. I think they were impressive. That said, I didn't
think they were compelling enough to me personally that I would want to
look at them again and again, which is why I would have wanted to buy
the magazine. Bob is right, of course, that I could have bought the
magazine as an investment, were I to track it down at a magazine shop
somehow. But for the aesthetic gratification that comes from seeing
stereo, I'll turn elsewhere than an anaglyph magazine--there is no
comparison with a crisp, clear, vibrantly colored view seen in a good
viewer. Not that anyone claimed that the SI was trying to have that
sort of appeal--the intended audience and impact was undoubtedly far
different.
If I get a chance I'll look again. Maybe my indifference is more of
an indictment of my taste and lack of versatility than a pan of the SI
product. But then I know some folks don't like Velvia, or projection,
or side-by-side prints. Ain't it great that we have all those
possibilities? (I, too, thought some of the ads were more interesting
from a 3D point of view than some of the action shots.) But I again
congratulate those who did the SI issue. I just haven't developed a
taste for the color distortion of anaglyphs, 'though if that's all there
is, it's at least as good as flatties. :)

>>I know what a super-human effort it was to chase those great pro
sports
shots in 2D, let alone 3D. Those of us involved couldn't possibly pass
up
an opportunity to grab a copy of that particular issue of S I as a
souvenir
of the occasion and effort involved. Can I ask, did you look at the
anaglyphs with the proper specs or did you simply put it down without
sufficient interest to use the specs which you admitted were still
attached
in the mag. unused? << (Allan Griffin)
