I am not an expert in this subject but from
previous discussion I gather that many museums
do not want your donation.  Because you or
your buddies think that you are someone, that
does not mean that the museum will agree to
house all your junk.

By accepting a donation, I would think a museum 
also accepts the responsibility to maintain
the collection. This costs money.  Why would a 
museum agree to that?

Also, museums are known to sell collections that
are of no interest to them anymore, so they can
acquire other collections of more interest.  I am
not sure if they sell to other museums or to
individuals, but if they do sell to individuals,
how is that different from selling directly to
private hands?

Finally, even if an important collection is
auctioned, aren't the museums also potential
buyers?

These are just a few issues to have in mind.
