I've wondered about this.  My first piece of stereo equipment was a
Franka splitter.  The results from that inspired me to go out and buy
a Realist.  Since then, I've tried twin point-and-shoots, Q-dos, Stitz
and Pentax splitters, Tri-Delta Prism, and probably one or two others
I can't think of now.

If a splitter as cheap as the Franka is available, I think that's an
ok way to start.  In general, though, splitters are pretty expensive.
