The subject matter should read: "*MY* Realist has
Soft Focus?"
We need to clarify a few issues here.
- How where these pictures taken? Flash? Tripod?
- When you say that in the hand viewer they looked crisp,
what viewer is that?
I would not expect the Realist lens to match the sharpness
of a modern SLR lens but I could not call it soft either.
And, if the lens is soft for some reason, you should be
able to see it in a good stereo viewer. I don't understand
why you don't see it in the viewer while you see in the
scanned image.
There are ways to check the lens sharpness and focus
in the Realist. I do it by examining the image on
a ground glass with a good magnifier.
Pictures from my Realist at f11 and flash are extremely
sharp.

>So I conducted a test. I tried a full length with my SLR using it with the long dimension horizontal to simulate how much of a frame would be used by the realist. This was shot at 10ft F8.5. Then I unloaded the roll in the dark and placed it in Realist 1. I did the same shot at 10ft carefully focused(focus dial also read 10ft, and again at F8.5 Then I varied the focus setting to 15ft, 12ft, 8ft, 6 ft, all shot at 10ft actual. I then switched the film to Realist 2 and repeated a similar sequence. My hope was that maybe the focus was off even though at 8.5 I had a decent depth of field. I then had the single roll of Provia professional 100 ASA film developed.

>Result: After scanning in the frames at 2700 dpi, I found that the Pentax Superprogram SLR produced crisp shots. They even looked good approaching 300%. The Realist shots regardless of focus point looked soft at 100% just like the publisher complained.
