I am hoping that Dr. T and some of the other experts may have some thoughts on a problem I have.

Recently I had some pictures published that were taken with my Realist. The publisher complained that while the 2/4 length portraits were ok, the full length shots were soft. I scanned one with my Nikon LS30 and then had it professionally drum scanned. In the hand viewer the shot looked crisp. In both cases the scan when shown on a monitor at 100% size was in fact slightly soft.

So I conducted a test. I tried a full length with my SLR using it with the long dimension horizontal to simulate how much of a frame would be used by the realist. This was shot at 10ft F8.5. Then I unloaded the roll in the dark and placed it in Realist 1. I did the same shot at 10ft carefully focused(focus dial also read 10ft, and again at F8.5 Then I varied the focus setting to 15ft, 12ft, 8ft, 6 ft, all shot at 10ft actual. I then switched the film to Realist 2 and repeated a similar sequence. My hope was that maybe the focus was off even though at 8.5 I had a decent depth of field. I then had the single roll of Provia professional 100 ASA film developed.

Result: After scanning in the frames at 2700 dpi, I found that the Pentax Superprogram SLR produced crisp shots. They even looked good approaching 300%. The Realist shots regardless of focus point looked soft at 100% just like the publisher complained.

has anyone else looked at this issue. Are the Realist lenses known for some lack of sharpness or have I missed something??? is there a different test I should try????
Thanks,
Mark Chapman
