[photo-3d] LCS systems

This subject was present here few times. A very extensive descriptions of
many LCS systems is available at http://www.stereo3d.com/3dhome.htm

I don't remember seeing any configuration details posted on this newsgroup
(I might have missed it, since sometimes I skip few digests). I think it
would be interesting to find out what people are using and their level of
satisfaction.

I own two different LCS models and I can't say they are completely
satisfying. The first one is Vrex VR Web Surfer Web Pack (wireless). The
glasses are heavy and very tight, so the painful experience develops when I
wear them for a longer time. Dark plastic covering LCS panels is too dark
and has some surface imperfections that distort the visibility. Removing it
is an option, but then flickering is too strong. additions difficulty is the
infrared 'connection'. The glasses go 'crazy' when used during a sunny day
or in a brightly lit room.

I thought about buying ELSA Revelator system, but it works only with ELSA
video card and is reported by some users as not too user friendly.

The other glasses H3D Cruiser (wired) were purchased when i-glasses offered
them
for just the cost of shipment. The ergonomics of those glasses are great -
they are very comfortable to use. Unfortunately they have the disadvantage
of making the viewed images very dark. I don't have a PC that supports page
flipping mode, so I need to use an interlaced setting. Those glasses make
the monitor screen loose at least 50% of the brightness as soon as the
line-blanker switch is set to S or R position (interlaced or interlaced
reversed). And when after that you put the glasses on to watch the image you
loose additional 50% of that already diminished brightness due to the fact
that each eye sees the image only for 1/2 of the monitor refresh cycle. So
the final viewing luminance is very low and a viewed picture looses it's
vibrancy. I thought that this initial brightness drop in the interlaced mode
was an issue of overloading the video signal and I asked the tech support.
The answer (below) did not address the question (I still don't know why LCS
setting would cause the monitor screen to go dim):

Yes, I have had the same experience with the glasses. A darker screen
happens most dramatically with the interlaced made for two reasons. One
reason is the shutter action which you have mentioned. The other is that
when you are viewing through the eye that is not blocked, you are getting
the image at half resolution, with scan lines, so the image is 50% dimmer.
Try increasing the resolution and refresh rate if you can, to help get the
image brighter. Also adjust your monitor.

So as the result I'm still searching for a better LCS product.

I have seen Dalia is offering the glasses comparable to H3D Cruiser, but
there are no any technical information about them on her web pages. I
suspect they will manifest identical problems.

Now the fun part. I suspect there are out there at least few people that are
happy with their LCS setup. There are few h/w aspects that contribute to
that satisfaction. Can you share some information with us?

1. monitor (vendor, model, refresh rate used/max),
2. video card (vendor, model, video RAM size, screen resolution used, modes
supported: interlaced/page flipping, any other applicable settings),
3. LCS glasses models in use,
4. viewer s/w used (e.g. Depthcharge, your other favorite)
5. your overall opinion about that setup.

I used my LCS glasses on two different computers:
1. Dell 21" Trinitron (Ultrascan 1600HS) and NEC 17", both 85 Hz max,
2. ATI 3D Rage Pro and ATI 64 Rage (can't find any info about the RAM size),
3. described above,
4. Depthcharge for JPS files and direct viewing with any photo editor for
JPG files created by AnaMaker for LCD shutter mode; also played with viewer
designed for ELSA.
5. So far I still prefer Vrex system better, but want to replace it with
something more comfortable to wear.
