Actually the Vivid has a particulary egregious case of
overlap on every frame, not the variable overlap typical
of the Realist and other 5P cameras. Flexibility for
setting the window in normal stereo mounts is limited
(compared to the Realist) when using the Vivid.
One of the little-talked-about advantages of the Realist
is the ease of mounting Realist chips compared to chips
from other 1950s stereo cameras. For example, compared to
the Revere, the Realist has the advantage of placing the
frame line between sprocket holes. With the Revere you end
up cutting a sprocket hole in half at every frame line. The
result (view with fixed width font):
] [] [] [] [] [ Revere
[] [] [] [] [] Realist
|overall image width|
I find the Realist film chips attach more securely to the
RBT pin bars. Ther are also less prone to dog-ear damage
at the corners from handling the chips.
As compared to several other 5P cameras, the Realist also
gives much greater vertical cropping flexibility. The Realist
image area extends about 1/2 way into the sprocket hole portion
of the film at both the top and bottom. I've seen chips from
other 5P cameras where the image area doesn't even reach the
bottom of the sprocket hole area. Sometimes I wonder how non-
Realist users can ever mount in 5P-Normal mounts. It almost
seems like they would have to have close-up and/or reduced-
height mounts for everything!
