A brief on-the-list reply, because I would encourage others to experiment
with this as well. If you want more details, ask me off-list.
Basically, I sync two cameras using radio control (RF) links. These can be
bought at Radio Shack and other electronics supply houses. you use one
transmitter and two receivers operating on the same frequency. If you have
a motor drive or a winder, you can connect this through a relay or
solid-state interface. For a manual camera, you must make up your own
"trigger" device out of cable releases and solenoids. This setup works
great for fireworks. For lightning, you would have to have a sensor, and
things get more complex.
Actually lightning might best be done with "open shutter" time exposures,
but again, the radio link will make certain that the shutters are opened and
closed at the same time to avoid getting a flash on one side that does not
appear on the other. I often use the open shutter technique for fireworks,
so that I can get several bursts per frame. Lightning would require a
very wide camera separation because of the extreme distance (hopefully!).
