I, too, bought an Epson 870. the x70 series use a new "lightfast" ink,
which is a good thing. They also contain an "intellichip" which enables
the printer to track the remaining ink supply accurately, which is a
good thing. Unfortunately Epson patented the chip, so third party
ink suppliers are now cut off from the Epson line, which is a bad
thing.

Look on the tssphoto Archival Inks page under the Looking for 3rd party
and/or archival inks for the 1270, 870, 875, 2000P or 777?
link. They explain the situation clearly and in detail.
