[photo-3d] 2D-2-3D Conversions and other Stuff

Thanks Dan for bringing up this always interesting subject.
I liked the one with the people lying on the floor more. I've done
(or rather attempted) some 2D-2-3D conversions in the past.
One recent one that I tried (in the same vain as 3-D Museum)
was downloading a famous 19th century painting from some
web site and converting it to 3-D. I didn't spend too much time
on it but just wanted to see how much work was involved (the
ones I did before were rather simple conversions).
I spend about 3 hours on it and it came out surprisingly well,
but not good enough that I would want to show the general
public. I showed it to my wife and daughter and much to my
surprise they loved it! I don't know if it's because I did such a
great job ;-) or my regular 3-D photography sucks in
comparison! LOL.
Any hoot, I didn't bother to save the final version. Although in
those 3 hours I converted "most" of the image, I could see
that finishing the details would take longer (a few days).
With experience maybe this would be a two day job.
One aspect that hasn't been touched upon, is the very eerie
feeling when doing these conversions. In the particular
painting I was attempting, after a short while, I felt myself
being literally totally immersed into the image (sort of like
a Twilight Zone episode!). I was living in the image space,
moving things around, much like moving furniture and
things in a room. I could almost feel what the original
artist went through to paint it. Maybe more so, on another
level.
Taking 2D to 3D to another "level" is converting 3D to 3D!
Now before someone thinks I'm nuts ;-), here are some
examples of what I mean. Check out the two following
images.

The above image is an animated anaglyph 3D image.
The next one is a parallel stereo pair.

This has been done by others before, I just wanted to
illustrate that 3-D conversions can be done to 3-D images
also (and is MUCH easier than 2D-2-3D)! Is there a term
used for these kind of conversions?
Also, although not strictly a conversion process, creating 3-D
paintings from scratch, and along similar lines creating
3-D ASCII pictures involves similar principles.
Another fascinating field is 3-D modeling where they take
two or more images (from any two vantage points) and have
the computer create a 3-D wire frame model. Then applying
a bit map texture on it and revolving the 3-D stereoscopic
model and viewing it from any angle! This is applied to many
of todays games and before that in military flight simulators,
although I don't know if they were stereoscopic. There are
several 3-D modelling programs on the net that can recreate
3-D models from images. One is PhotoModeler. It is
available in a downloadable shareware version.
