Sure, the higher cost of MF is a factor for me, and the relatively better
quality of the Realists and Reveres than the Sputniks is another. Also I
have never had any friends or relatives, anyone I am aware of, who used MF
(up until the last few months, that is); so I would just not be familiar
enough or comfortable enough with MF to jump in without learning more. I
mean, everybody and his brother picks up 35mm film at Kmart and throws it in
their cameras and gets it processed down at the corner store. MF is not
like that.
But the biggest factor by far, for me, is the nostalgia factor. My dad shot
35mm stereo with a Realist. I can (and do) make dupes of my slides and send
them to my mom, who still has the old family red button and Baja case full
of family slides, as well as send them to my brothers and sisters along with
a $3 viewer. And it means something to us all, a connection to the past
that evokes warm fuzzy feelings. A Sputnik would have all the warm fuzzies
of an ice cube to us, I'm afraid. (Although twinned Rolleis sound like a
partially melted ice cube!)
That's not to say I won't try it some time down the road, in fact I'd really
like to...but not right away. I'm still enjoying 35mm stereo too much.
Best regards,
Mike Galazin
