Having just returned from a four day exploration of New Orleanso make several
recommendations, photographic and otherwise.

1) Stay away from Bourbon Street if you're looking for beautiful old New
Orleans. Try the NE end of the quarter for quieter, residential beauty.

2) Drive down St. Charles (west, or upriver from the Quarter) and you should
have many photo ops, particularly of the streetcars rumbling along the
oak-covered boulevard (perspective!!). And make sure you stop into The
Columns hotel for a drink at the bar, it's cheap and relaxing, very southern.
Not touristy!

3) Be careful in the cemeteries, they're dangerous. The Lafayette is nice, in
the Garden District (Washington, north of Magazine). The St. Louis #1 is the
most visited, and therefore fairly safe. The #2 is cooler looking, but a bit
sacrier crimewise.

4) Great places to eat: The Original Papa Joe's, Bourbon and Toulouse (get the
gumbo!), Napolean House St. Louis and Chartres(?) for Muffalettas, and for
something upscale make a reservation at Brigstens.

5) Bars: I don't drink, but you should check out Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop on
Bourbon at St. Philip, the afforementioned The Columns, and for something
truly local, take a cab to Saturn Bar on St. Claude (30-somthing) in Bywater
neighborhood. Don't be afraid when you get there, it's very friendly inside.

6) Nightlife: Tippitinas Uptown for jazz and blues. The best place I found
though, totally local, is Mid-City Rock and Bowl. It's a combination bowling
alley and Zydeco dancehall that is very authentic and hopping fun. If you're
interested in checking out the Bourbon street strip clubs, watch out. You can
spend a huge amount of money just getting in to the bars tryng to find a good
one. GO DIRECTLY TO TEMPTATIONS. It's the only one you need. Very
comfortable, very friendly, and not high-pressure. Plus the girls are beautiful.

That's not all 3-D related, forgive me. But I've just fallen in love with New
Orleans, not to mention "Inez" at Temptations and feel like telling everybody
I know.
