The machine was used to train people to read faster. Controllable snippets
of text were projected through a shutter mechanism. The idea was to train
the eye to reduce the amount of time the brain took to register the words at
each reading stop. It worked -- gains in reading speed did not exact a price
in terms of retention. The "speed reading" courses generally showed
improvements in reading speed, but comprehension declined in direct
proportion to the speed increase. The tachistoscopic improvements were
smaller, but more effective.

Several people made these gadgets and the film format used was never
standardized. The one I used had the text on continuous-reading 35mm film.
