Now, this makes ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE!!!

Most probably you were bidding against someone's maximum
bid.  You would have gotten the same result by just
bidding ONCE, your MAXIMUM AMOUNT (Initial bid + x times
y dollars) say 10 seconds before the end.

What is the purpose of such option?  I really
don't get it.
