E-Bay "sniping" or last minuite bidding turns the auction into a SEALED BID
auction. This is OK, as long as everyone understands the rules. Everybody
should bid their top bid in the last 20 seconds. This is what I do when I
can be at the computer, otherwise, I leave the bid just before I have to
leave the house.
If you want Realist format stereo on a medium format camera, try the Iso
Super Duplex. That one has a pair of lenses instead of all the reflection
problems you get with mirror beam splitters. Best for close-ups, however,
as the window is at only 2.9 feet.
My FED stereo (pre BOY) has a hard film advance. The first fix was to shim
up the film cartridge with a cut-down washer as the Russian cartridge is
.050" shorter than ours. The aligns the film better. But I still have to
"help" the advance along by turning the take-up knob as I crank the lever.
Toward the end of a 36exp roll I always think I am going to strip some
perfs again before I make it to the end.
I think it would help to crease the film after inserting it into the slot,
otherwise it creates a bulge that drags. This take-up spool has a slip
clutch so once it starts slipping due to binding film, you are using the
sprocket to force the film onto the spool. Also, you should locate the
film about 1/8" above the bottom of the spool to avoid cross winding it and
making it larger in diameter. I have not tried this yet.
Anyone else have similar problems? Ed Shaw's "BOY" does not have the
problem, nor do his four early models.
I also got light leaks after having taped most of the back seam with black
masking tape. This happened on the beach on Sanibel FL. I skipped one
place right under the viewfinder and I think the light came in there.
I am building a Ricoh GR-1 twin rig with overlapping cameras for 65mm base
and a mechanical release. Watch for photos posted of it. I like being
able to switch from mono to stereo just by where you click the release. It
is a tongue depressor velcro'd between the buttons with a knob in the
center. You just click either end to get mono. The new model (GR-1s) is
improved by taking filters and a lens hood. On the new model, when you set
infinity or snapshot focus mode, the lens goes to that position and stays
there, while on the old one it goes there when you depress the button half
way. Therefore, you can't twin an old with a new camera and use these
modes. Autofocus is the same on both, however.
The last Stereo World had a photo of such a rig made by Dr. Gilde. You can
still buy the camera out of the USA.
