I'm not sure how many people are aware of this, but if you're interested
in fluorescent lights in your old viewer.....

And click on the fluorescent lamps link.
I bought a couple from fry's last night (100mm long). They are just a
_smidge_ too long to fit into my red button viewer without surgery. If I
were willing to make the cut, I could probably put them in.
It's tight, but I think I could put them into my kodaslide I+ (I've
upgraded the lenses). They're very bright, at close to the brightness of
the halogen bulb that's normally in there. The color temperature is
5600k, so it's a more daylight light source, and I was able to get it to
light using just a nine volt battery (the ballast wants 12v 250 mA).
The bulbs cost me $10 at Frys, and $10 for the power converter. I
haven't had the chance to do anything real with it yet, but it does look
interesting so far.

ps - obviously, if you want to use these as some sort of lightsource for
an Elvira viewer or something, it's going to be much easier.
Also I noticed that the company also sells an 83mm version of the
lights. They weren't available at Frys, however.
