There are a few other differences between NYSS and most other clubs.

1) Membership is not required in order to attend meetings.

Although there is a core element who are at most meetings, I think
there is also a sizeable number of attendees who show up out of
curiosity (perhaps they saw a flyer somewhere or saw a sign in the
museum) who either don't come to another meeting or do return but
   don't officially join.

2) I think (but may be wrong) that most NYSS attendees do not actively
   pursue stereo photography.

I base this on the questions I get when I show stuff after meetings
during the show & tell sessions.

Most meetings have been presentations by guest speakers. There
have been member presentations (like Sheldon's at the last
meeting), and there was a members' night where anyone could bring
   anything to show.

I also think that meeting at the American Museum of Natural History
may be a big advantage for NYSS. If there are signs up in the mueseum
about the meetings (I haven't been in the museum on days that meetings
are held) that could draw a sizable crowd.
