In a message dated 01-02-21 19:50:47 EST, Brian Reynolds writes
<<There are a few other differences between NYSS and most other clubs.
1) Membership is not required in order to attend meetings.
Although there is a core element who are at most meetings, I think
there is also a sizeable number of attendees who show up out of
curiosity (perhaps they saw a flyer somewhere or saw a sign in the
museum) who either don't come to another meeting or do return but
don't officially join. >>
Just to elaborate on the very perceptive comments made by Brian Reynolds.
There seems to be a percentage of people (maybe 20%) who attend the NYSS at
any given meeting but do not join. The museum policy is for the meetings to
be open to the public and I think this is a good policy. There have been
people who attended for this reason and have since become interested in 3D
and have since joined. Also, as long as there is room for the dues paying
members, let's fill the rest of the seats with those coming out of curiosity.
Depending on the auditorium used, there is usually room for 120 - 150 people.
<<2) I think (but may be wrong) that most NYSS attendees do not actively
pursue stereo photography. I base this on the questions I get when I
show stuff after meetings during the show & tell sessions. Most meetings
have been presentations by guest speakers. There have been member
presentations (like Sheldon's at the last meeting), and there was a members'
night where anyone could bring anything to show. I also think that meeting
at the American Museum of Natural History may be a big advantage for NYSS.
If there are signs up in the mueseum
about the meetings (I haven't been in the museum on days that meetings are
held) that could draw a sizable crowd.>>
There are many people at the NYSS meetings that are not familiar with or do
not actively pursue stereo photography and this is evident by the questions
asked. Some seem to be genuinely interested in learning and trying their
hand at 3D while others will never shoot 3D. The nice thing is that everyone
enjoys sharing their knowledge and even though there is a mix of experts and
novices, everyone feels comfortable. With such a large group it is easy to
find experts in all formats of 3D imaging, and on any given evening one can
get advice on lenticular/barrier grid imaging, anaglyph imaging, mounting,
digital 3D, computer generated 3D, 3D photographic techniques, large format
3D, etc. And can you imagine a better setting than the Museum of Natural
History?! - one of the world's greatest museums! What a bonus to arrive
early and stroll around the museum. I've been to the museum over a hundred
times and I always discover something I haven't noticed before. I am sure
the setting itself increases attendance by at least 10% or more. Not to
mention the world famous guest presentors ( I won't mention names for fear of
leaving someone out ) who usually have a following of 25 or 30 guests who may
not otherwise have attended. It all adds up to great crowds and a great
educational/entertaining evening. If you have not yet made it to one of the
NYSS meetings, please make an effort to come to our next meeting. I
guarantee you a great time.
