Another way that has given me very good results is by using a 
digital camera and a low power microscope. The neat thing is
I can also crop the image by zooming in with the microscope.

Another similar method which works well is to couple the digital
camera with a loupe or even a viewmaster viewer. I've noticed
that you usually need a digital camera that has a zoom and it
also helps if the lens on the digital camera is not too big.

Many years ago I had done similar copying using a videocamera
and Snappy! The quality is not up to par to today's standards 
but it worked surprisingly well for it's day! Examples (cross
