You have put your finger on an issue that is crucial to stereo
projection!  The projectionist controls the time allowed for
the audience to view each scene.  There is a great temptation
to speed through the slides, especially when they hold familiar
scenes that are well-known to the operator of the projector.

Prints and slides under a viewer do allow for self-regulation
of display time.  Patience is required for stereopsis to lock
on, but once the brain connects the retinal disparity (the WOW
for neophytes), you can navigate to your heart's content: go out
into the distance, or to the details of the foreground. That
is one of the exciting aspects of 3D images.
