I use a mounting gauge and start off by mounting to infinity. This is
because when viewing one image at a time it is easier to identify the
fartherest object than the nearest. Then I look in stereo and try to
identify the nearest object. Then I check that against the left line of
the gauge. If that is closer (to the left) of the left line, and is
touching the right or left edge, it must be moved. Otherwise, I have to
decide whether I want the closest object to stick out in the center, OR if
I want to have excessive divergence at infinity. With my eyes, I have
trouble going the least bit "wall eyed", i.e. merging distant objects with
more that 1.2mm divergence on slide or more that 4-5" on screen. Extra
convergence (more that 1.2mm divergence on slide or more that 4-5" on
screen) is no problem for me but probably is for most others. I can go x3
as much on convergence.

So in summary, I start by mounting to infinity, then for images with
excessive depth range, I compromise.

I used to mount by eye but the results as checked later with a mounting
gauge were all over the place, I mean really bad. "But they looked OK in
the viewer"

Mounting slides taken with a Realist or Kodak, etc is easy compared with
mounting 8 perf slides taken with an 75mm base RBT. With that camera you
often get excessive depth range. The window is at 7' (35mm) to 14' (70mm)
and it is not always possible to exclude objects closer than that. I now
have an uncoupled pair of 28mm f/2.8 Cosina/Phoenix lenses for that camera
to try. They are lighter & smaller than the zooms and have the window at
about 5.7'.

I shortened the signature and turned off word-wrap so will see how it looks
in the Digest. Probably better for most of you, but too wide for a few.
It depends on how you setup your mail viewer for word-wrap.

Thanks, Paul T, for your suggestions.
