Mounting gauges were all to go years ago.  However, people using them were
forever getting pulled up for window violations.  The problem lays with the
fact that folks cannot always identify the closest item in the stereo (and
understandably so).  If you use a gauge, you must be able to visually check
the result in some way or its like having a bag over your head.  Mill out
the apertures in your hand viewer if necessary so that you get a GOOD view
of the frame edges.  Otherwise check by projection or freeviewing.  Are you
acutely aware of which way to move one chip relative to the other in order
to move the window forward (out of the picture) for instance?
