In Section 3.3 of the Illustrated Guide to Slide Mounting

it states:

This is highly oversimplified, but the stereo window is in
some ways like the border of a 2D picture.  But because it
is viewed stereoscopically, the stereo window, like the objects
in a scene viewed stereoscopically, has a position in 3D space.

The placement of the stereo window relative to the objects in
the scene can be altered in mounting stereo slides or prints.
