You might want to try aiming one of the flash units upward to bounce off of
a white ceiling or a white card.  Using dual flash in this manner has been a
staple of monoscopic photographers for years.  It really softens the
shadows, and makes people pictures much more flattering than a single
head-on flash.

Incidentally, the original Nimslo flash unit is actually a dual unit, with
the top flash unit on a swivel specifically so that it can be used for
bounce fill in that manner.  Sort of emulating in one unit what
photographers have done for years with two.
