I just checked the stock I have and the 5P Spicer mounts are a
near perfect fit with the RBT 5p mounts (definitely not
wider). The 7p Spicer mounts I have are also a tad smaller
than the 7p RBT mounts. I tried a few dozen of each and all
seemed to be the same.

The aperture spacing seems to be equal on both 5p and 7p.

The difference is all but undetectable when an RBT is laid
over a Spicer. The only way I could tell the difference was to
punch out one of the Spicer apertures and place it inside of
the RBT aperture.
Besides, if the Spicer aperture is smaller than the RBT
aperture it wouldn't matter as the window would be smaller and
you wouldn't have a violation. If the Spicer aperture is
larger than the RBT aperture then you wouldn't be able to see
this when you placed the RBT on the Spicer.
I am of the school that mounts "to the window" and I am very
sensitive to window violations. I very rarely ever have any
problem mounting with the RBT jig to Spicer mount - and I have
mounted literally thousands of images this way.
Perhaps you have gotten a "bad" batch of Spicer or RBT's. Have
you tried measuring several different mounts to see if there
is a manufacturing tolerance. Perhaps there are subtle
difference in the various dies used to cut or form the mounts.
