RJV responds:
I use a similar technique in a modified way to photograph pipe organ
interiors. Rather than to use a true beamsplitter to direct the light, I
paint the subject with light. I place my stereo camera on a tripod and
pop a hand held flash about 8 to 20 times (depends) moving it around
(lots) and covering all areas with each pop from many different
positions. The shadows are very soft and the subject shows up without
any cardboard effect because the shadows don't completely disappear. I
adjust the thyrister flash for about 1/4 power or so and pop until
experience tells me when to stop.
