Actually, the inital proposal was to help get his camera
(we know where the camera is) back to his hands.
This involves cooperation beyond monetary donations
and it is quite possible that a donation will not be needed.

You seem to equate personal belongings to a monetary
value and you are saying that getting back ones personal
belongings and giving them money to replace them is the
same thing. I don't think it is.

If I lose my RBT camera and it is known where it is, I
would appreciate any help to get it back to my hands.
If my camera is stolen I would not ask anyone to get
me another one, but if someone knows where MY
camera is, I would appreciate any information or help
to get it back to me. If I drop it in the big ocean, well...
tough luck. I think there is a difference.

Now, if you care a lot about Don and his stolen camera
and if you think that he needs help to replace it, you are
welcome to initiate an effort to collect money and buy
a replacement. Present your case and we'll consider it.
