 Many scanners will also run with a PhotoShop plug in. If the right plug in
 didn't come with the scanner software, try going to the Epson web site
 (http://support.epson.com/hardware/scanner/per16u/index.html) and see if 
there
 is a plug in or upgrade or patch to download.

A better answer for the Epson Perfection 1640 SU (which I also have) and many 
others is Ed Hamrick's Vuescan.

This deceptively simple interface is under constant revision, and the quality 
just gets better and better.

You can download a trial version from www.hamrick.com which is fully 
functional, but the scans are "watermarked" so unusable.

Registration is only $40 for lifetime use - including all the upgrades...
