Boris,

There's a shareware, cross-platform, multi-scanner driver called VueScan
that gets rave reviews for image quality (terrible ones for user interface).
Unfortunately, I can't relate any personal experiences with it as I couldn't
get it to work on my Mac at all (maybe not enough physical RAM, I've only
got 48 MB in there).  But since it's shareware, it's easy enough to check
out on your setup, see if it supports your scanner, etc.  Look for it on
versiontracker.
