"Finders keepers, losers weepers" *may* be older and it *may* be more common
-- but it's not law. It *is* is folk wisdom. FYI "Finders keepers, Losers
weepers" is an old Scottish proverb, according to a legal casebook I have --
but I don't know just how old. The principal that the finder of an object
has "good title as against the whole world save the true owner" goes back as
least as far as a 1722 English case. In most instances, this principle
trranslates into victory for the finder, simply because no one else can
demonstrate true ownership to the satisfaction of a court. But in Grant's
case, presumably he has a receipt referencing the serial number. He ought to
be able to demonstrate true ownership.
