FYI, I spoke to my insurance agent (State Farm) to clarify my own
coverage and options. My homeowners policy would cover losses at
"replacement value" of personal camera equipment etc from fire and theft
etc (covering "17 named perils") up to the $90K+ alloted for personal
possessions in the policy. There are limitations on certain items e.g.
cash ($200), items used in business ($1000), watercraft ($1000) and some
others such as jewelry and silverware where there is a maximum. An
individual item can only be covered up to $5000. If a camera were stolen
from my car, it would probably be covered, "but it depends on the
circumstances" and it would be a case by case decision.
A separate policy against "all hazards" can be obtained for around $15
per year per $1000 coverage, that would cover other losses or damage
such as dropping a camera into the lake (not that I would ever do such a
thing!), and presumably would cover unplanned Goodwill donations. I
don't believe there is a deductible on this, unlike my homeowners. I
plan to have him write me a policy for photo equipment and possibly for
my canoes. It looks like my stereoview collection and viewmaster
collection etc should be covered "at current market value" on my
homeowners policy so would not require separate coverage.
I am also in the process of updating my inventories. -Linda
