I recognize that this is a "NOW we close the barn door" suggestion, but
insurance companies offer full-coverage "riders" on home owners insurance
(at least mine does) that list specific items and replacement values
individually. My cameras, audio equipment, and certain pieces of jewelry are
all itemized by serial # and description (some things are photographed,
too... but only in 2D). My old cameras are covered whether they're stolen,
dropped into a lake or thrown at the neighbor's cat. We've all been exposed
to a valuable object lesson as a result of Mr.
Campos' misadventure, and have the opportunity to protect ourselves from
similar circumstances.
