I haven't used this scanning software, but have read that it can
significantly improve the quality of a scanner's output by increasing
control over exposure, sharpening and color balance.  Silverfast lists a
version for the Epson 1600 for Mac or Windows, but if that isn't compatible
I would imagine a 1640 version is in the works.   Polaroid includes a
version of Silverfast with their 4000 dpi slide scanner.    Are you using
the 1640 to make prints from slides?   I'm curious to hear if you're
satisfied with the amount of detail you get using Epson's transparency
adaptor.
