[photo-3d] Evoca 70 twin rig

This little 7oz camera from Samsung is only $119 and comes with nice
features for a twin rig. Snap mode sets the focus to 9' and reduces the
delay from between pressing the button and shutter release. There is also
an infinity mode. The lens is a Schneider 35-70mm f/4.5-8.1 and zooms in
five steps, so you can get a match in FL. The infrared remote ($12) sets
off a 2 second timer (bad news), then both cameras go off. The good news
is that the delay is 2.0000000 seconds! This is because it is done in
software using the quartz clock xtal. I am going to photograph a ceiling
fan and check on the mismatch, but it is not noticeable by looking at the
flashes from the two cameras.

I plan to mount these on a balsa wood base with a tongue depressor stick
velcroed between the shutter buttons. A plastic button is glued in the
center of the stick. The cameras are overlapped to reduce the length of
the stick and to set the base at about 70mm. The remote should also work.
Once you have set the cameras into the remote mode, it stays there so you
can take shot after shot. You can also zoom using the remote.

Inside a white room, the remote should work bounced off the walls so you
don't have to be in the picture. It is good for 16' straight on.

I haven't taken any photos yet, so stay tuned to see how well the lenses
and exposures are matched.

The total weight is 18oz. Compare to 41oz for a Realist and 50-60oz for an
RBT. And it is auto-everything. You can also take mono photos when the
subject isn't right for stereo. Just press on either end of the stick.
Should make a good travel stereo camera when you are already carrying a
video camera as well.
