Thanks for the tip on Silverfast. Also thanks to the many replies I have
received offline. Very helpful!

I've already tried it on some medium format chromes that I shot recently.
Resolution and file size seems passable for that format (i.e. the scan
resolves image detail comparable to what a pro scan would get me off of
35mm slide).

I wanted a scanner that would do 120 and 135 transparencies as well as
color prints. Since I've been creating a lot of polaroids lately, that I
want to be able to scan, plus stereocards. I was under no illusions: a
dedicated film scanner would have been far preferable to scanning my film -
but scanners for 120 film are pricey. At $400, the Epson 1640su photo
can't be beat: 1600 dpi resolution that gives me great print scans plus
film scans useful for the web. I plan to continue to use the Kodak
PHoto-CD process for high end scanning, or my friend's drum scanner.

I am participating in Dan Shelley's scanner group, and will run his test
slide through both the 1640 and the drum scanner. (He says he wants a full
resolution file on the WHOLE slide in TIFF format, which will run you
112Mb! I think for the curious with modest hardware, I will include a
cropped version...)

Boris

I'm going to be off-net for a couple of days, moving my office to expanded
facilities. Note the new phone number below.
