I have an Artiscan 2400 (no doubt called that because of the 2400 d.p.i.
optical rating, with 9600 d.p.i. software interpolated), which I have been
quite happy with for the last two years. I had originally done a similar
bit of surgery on the 2x2 slide carrier, removing the dividing bar with a
Dremel tool and adding strips of styrene to fill in the top and bottom gaps.
I noticed that recently the added strips are beginning to separate.
Apparently the plastic epoxy adhesive I used is drying out. I plan to
re-glue them with a solvent type adhesive which should last more
permanently.
For those who may be looking into a film scanner (it also comes with a
filmstrip carrier for negatives), I bought it in 1999 at Fry's Electronics
for $130. It included software for DocuPal, DocuMan, Adobe PhotoDeluxe,
and Textbridge Classic. The latter is an OCR program that I have not used
very much, but seemed to introduce quite a few errors when exported into
Word 97. I don't know why it was included with a film scanner, other than
that the Artiscan people also make flatbed scanners. Which, of course is
the way I tried to use it (with my PaperPort flatbed instead). I understand
that there is a newer version, which I have not tried. Originally, I
thought that it would be a neat way to reformat the variety of manuals and
newsletters that I have on stereo cameras, viewers, projectors, etc., to a
common size and shape; but apparently that is not a very practical
application.
