[photo-3d] photo-3d changeover

After some 8 (depending on when you start counting) years,
I've decided to pass along the running of
photo-3d to Paul Talbot.

A brief history of the list...

Photo-3d was started in the mid/late '80s by Tom Neff, but it went
silent for a couple of years. It was re-activated by John Bercovitz.
However, eventually security concerns about computing facilities
on government systems forced him to give it up. I took it over
and continued running it under listserv/listproc at the various
universities where I've taught. The free version of listserv had
to be fairly heavily customized in order to get it to work correctly
for our purposes (some of you may remember the mail loops,
and errors in rejecting legitimate postings). About
1996 buy/sell volume on the list increased to the point that
complaints brought about the creation of sell-3d for commerce,
tech-3d for highly technical subjects, and the incorporation of
sd-3d which originated in San Diego.

In recent years the growth of the internet has provided e-bay
to bring together far-flung buy/sell members of sell-3d with off-list
persons, and the emergence
of commercial mailing list institutions which have eliminated the need
for high speed internet access plus customized programming in order to
run a list as far as the moderator is concerned.

Additionally, in the last year I have assumed duties of chair of the
Computer Science department at the college here, plus having some
concerns about keeping the list running during the summer and at other
times I'm not on campus. Lastly, some thing said on the list in the
last 6 months are liable to "spook" the administration of the
college here, and I'd like not to be put in the position of having to
defend the existance of the list (or worse).

Through the years, a number of people have provided invaluable assistance
in the running of the list. Many thanks George, John, and the others
whom I've forgotten to mention.

At some point in the future, I'll have the keyword searchable archives
of my years running photo-3d back online, and I'll also be lurking
in the background.

THANKS!
