Phil Palmer wrote inquiring about getting scans done of some archival glass
transparencies. Phil said that he wanted to have the scanned images
transferred to 35 mm slide film as well as prints suitable for mounting to
the standard 7 X 3.5 inch "Holmes" format stereo-cards.

No doubt, Phil, you have seen it reported on this List previously that the
relatively new digital FUJI FRONTIER mini-labs are just the answer for the
STEREO CARD part of your problem. They are far less expensive than any of
the conventional techniques and the quality is superb. Irrespective of the
size and format of your originals, they can print out just what you need for
the Holmes format. I have used them quite a bit. The labs are now
wide-spread. Just ask around or call mini-labs in your area. Ask if they
have Fuji Frontier equipment installed. Their standard prints (color or
B&W) are on 6 X 4 inch stock. This is just right for stereo cards if you
need to crop a little in height. If you don't want to crop, they can easily
(assuming that the outfit you choose can be bothered with you!) print your
images say 3.25 in high, just right to go straight into Q-VU mount or
otherwise (some white is left on the top and bottom of a regular 6 X 4
print). Blemishes can be restored at time of scanning, too (a little more
money, of course).

On the subject of scanning for slide production, the Frontier equipped
mini-lab can simply save your scans to CD at time of scanning for the
prints. Of course, its horses for courses when you want to get images from
your CD on to your 35mm film. I haven't gone this route as yet but we often
hear here on List about where is the best place to go for this service. The
general opinion is that its simply a question how much you are prepared to
pay for what kind of quality. List members will know details. Once you
start a CD with a Frontier equipped mini-lab, you simply get more images
added from time to time at any scanning service. I have opted to go this
route prior to starting to do my own scanning. The resolution is unbeatable
IMO.
