Hmm.  I see what you mean.  While we're at it, let's ban the vertical 
dimension from life as well.  That way, us extra-dimension shooters can save 
money and film by using a yet-to-be designed camera that registers only width 
and depth.  And those poor, benighted 2D shooters can really blow us away 
with shots that register only one dimension, width.  Now, does anyone have 
any suggestions on how to design a projector to show all these marvelous 
images without the vertical dimension? :-)

Seriously, though, I have no problem cropping down a vertical 35 mm shot, if 
it improves the composition -- and often, I have to admit, it does.  But I do 
have a problem forcing a carefully composed vertical shot into a square or 
horizontal format just to accommodate the mechanics of presentation.
