In our January club meeting we had as a guest
Joe Polevoi, a local fellow who specializes in
Kaleidoscope photography. He showed us 2D images
of an abstract, "dream like" nature. I believe that
he and his wife build Kaleidoscopes and offer them
for sale.
The idea of Kaleidoscope photography had crossed my
mind several years ago and I even bought a Kaleidoscope
for experimentation (which I have not really use yet!)
In principle, there are two ways to go about it:
1) Shift the camera while holding the Kaleidoscope fixed
so you can take the pair through the Kaleidoscope (obviously
requires a large Kaleidoscope).
2) Attach the Kaleidoscope to the lens and shift both.
One problem that will become readily apparent is that
the mirrors in the Kaleidoscope will cause vertical
shifts (a problem in stereo) unless they are oriented in
the vertical or horizontal direction only.
I recall reading about a member of the Chicago Stereo
Club doing some work in this area. I would be interested
to hear from any members here who have information on
3D Kaleidoscope photography.
About the Stereogram, it is published 10 times a year,
September to June. It is 6-8 pages, copied in B&W.
Subscriptions are $15 for the USA and $20 (international)
or $10 for the email version, anywhere in the world
(it is distributed as a pdf file via email). All the
money from the subscriptions go to our club, so it is
for a good cause. At the end of every season (around
June) we put the newsletters together in a bound volume
and now we have 4 such volumes for sale for $15 plus
shipping.
Also, at the end of season I put the Tutorials together
in a bound volume and offer them for sale. Just to make
this clear, the money from this go to my pocket. :)
Email me for more information.

George Themelis
