I too would recommend the same, but for a different reason!
The only way to really display digital 3D is via stereo pairs or anaglyph
(oh sure, you can spend a lot and have slides made, but them why bother in
the first place?). I'm not a big fan of color anaglyphs due to the
disparities caused by the two different color lenses. I tend to change my
photos to B&W before running them through the anaglyph process, so I've lost
the advantages of color. Stereo cards will have to be printed, and if your
printer goes through those expensive cartridges as fast as mine does, this
probably won't be an option (although I'm going to do some tests to see what
kind of quality I can get...). Ahh, I've forgotten shutter glasses. Now I
will need to carry my laptop with me to display the images (and I'm not even
sure that there's any standards in this industry yet...).
Of course there are is the plus side - I tend to take one good picture every
20 or so rolls of film (and those usually by accident!) (sigh...) So I can
throw away my bad shots without feeling guilty! Probably hundreds, even
thousands of pics can be stored on one CD Rom. (Heaven knows that Marshall
has taken advantage of this idea. I recently purchased his 3D CD travelogue
magazine on his trip to Cuba and I think it's some of the best stuff I've
seen in the anaglyph format to date.) Photoshop can be used to enhance and
or correct all kinds of mistakes.
So my point is, yeah, try out digital with a cheap camera (or two) to see if
it's really for you, but I'm as sure that you'll be hooked...
