Hi Doc,
>I have to ask why a dedicated digital camera person
>is interested in a Stereo Realist...
Ah Ha....A very good question. And the answer is....it will be a long
while until I can afford two high quality digitals to make a dual system
out of. As mush as I feel I've been able to sortta master the single
camera technique, I'd like to like to have a stereo camera to capture
action with......even with its restricted separation ;-)
As for viewing. Well, yes I would have to scan in the images for two
reasons. First off so that there is more one copy of them. Secondly, so
that adjustments/ehnacments/tricks can be easily done. Don't get me
wrong....I have a great deal of respect for both mediums.
About three months ago while cleaning out the basement (yes, some of us
in CA have basements ;-) ) I came across a very large box with the label
"dad's pictures". The box was full of 8mm home movies and stereo slides
my father-in-law took from the late 40's to the late 60's (the stereos
began in '52, there are over 1K stereos to sort through). Along with the
images I found an old Kodak viewer in the box.. I am now pestering my
wife her sister and brother to try and think where the camera might
be....it remains missing.
You are right in saying that viewing stereo slides is magical. It's
amazing how the images appear. It's also amazing how well some of these
images have held up over the years. You should have seen my 8 year old
son's expression when he saw stereos of his mom's first birthday party!!
For others time has not been so kind. He shot three rolls at the NY
World's Fair in June '65. He overexposed most of these. By scanning them
in and doing a lot of adjustments and enhancements I was able to restore
them to close to original colors. Many of the ones that have done well
in terms of fading show the effects of various life forms eating away at
the emulsion. All of these images can be saved by scanning them in and
'fixing' the problems.
Yes, I'll both save stereo slides to be viewed as slides and scan them
in too (although I'll lean toward scanning). I find the multifaceted
aspects of stereo very intriguing.
If you can sell me a Realist for ~$100 with a warranty .....I'm buying.
But, I'm not giving up digital by any stretch.
Thanks,
Eric
